After being labeled by many as a challenger for the Premier League title at the start of the season, Liverpool have not been able to live up to the expectations. The Reds are currently placed eight in the standings, with 16 points from 11 games. They have won only four of those matches and are heading into this contest on the back of losing to bottom-side Nottingham Forest at the weekend. Meanwhile, Ajax have continued to impress in Eredivisie under head coach Alfred Schreuder but have struggled in the Champions League. They are placed third in the group with just three points from four games. Let us take a look at what to expect when these two teams go head-to-head with each other:

Alisson Becker set for landmark appearance

Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker is set to reach a milestone on Wednesday night. If the Brazilian shot-stopper starts for the Reds at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, he will represent Liverpool for the 200th time since joining them from AS Roma in 2018. As of now, there have only been nine goalkeepers who have played more times for the Anfield outfit than the Brazilian. Ray Clemence (665) tops the list, followed by Bruce Grobbelaar (628) and Elisha Scott (468). Besides, Alisson has registered 89 clean sheets for the Reds till now.

Mohamed Salah inches closer to Steven Gerrard’s tally

Alisson Becker is not the only one on the cusp of reaching a landmark with the Reds. Mohamed Salah needs just two more goals to level with Steven Gerrard’s European club record of 41. Overall, the Egyptian magician has found the back of the net 165 times for Liverpool and has produced 67 assists in 270 games. On the other hand, Steven Gerrard has registered 186 goals and 153 assists in 710 games for Liverpool.

A must-win for Ajax

Ajax will need three points more than Liverpool when the two sides face each other on Wednesday night. The Dutch outfit are currently placed third in Group A of the Champions League after four games. After comfortably beating Rangers in their first group match, Ajax went on to lose their next three games in a row. Shockingly, the Dutch side conceded a combined total of 10 goals in their last two matches against Napoli. Hence, they will need the three points on Wednesday to have any chance of making it out of Group A.
