Coventry City will begin their EFL Cup campaign away to AFC Wimbledon at Cherry Red Records stadium on Wednesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a goalless draw away to Grimsby Town in their League Two opener at the weekend, while the Sky Blues kicked off their Championship season with a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City. Since the formation of the Dons, they have never tasted victory in six encounters against Coventry, with the last clash in 2019 ending in a 2-1 defeat, but the Wombles have held their upcoming visitors to a draw in their last two visits to South-West London.

AFC Wimbledon managed to ensure survival in League Two by the skin of their teeth last season courtesy of collecting 48 points from 46 games, just two points clear of the relegation zone. The Dons returned for the pre-season early in July and went unbeaten in six friendlies this summer, recording four wins and two draws in the process. The Wombles made the 400-plus trip to play their 2023-34 League Two opener on Saturday, and managed to earn a point despite having just 38% of ball possession. From the perspective of Johnnie Jackson’s side, a home tie in the EFL Cup first round is a welcome boost both in terms of finances and the fact that they had a long journey at the weekend.
Coventry, on the other hand, had an impressive Championship campaign last term, reaching the final of the promotion playoffs, where they were beaten by Luton Town in the penalty shootout. The Sky Blues were expected to make a positive start to their 2023-24 English second tier campaign against Leicester at the weekend, but lost the fixture despite taking the lead through Kyle McFadzean’s 47th-minute effort. The Foxes scored two late goals through Kieran Dewsbury-Hall and took all three points. Nevertheless, Mark Robins’ side had plenty of positives to take from the performance at King Power Stadium, having created 20 goal-scoring chances and recorded six shots on target against the title-favourites.
AFC Wimbledon probable starting lineup: Tzanev; Ogundere, Lewis, Sutcliffe, Johnson; Neufville, Ball, Pell, Tilley; Al-Hamadi, Sasu
