AC Milan will play host to Atalanta in a Coppa Italia quarter-final fixture at San Siro on Wednesday night. Both sides were involved in Serie A fixture at the weekend, with the hosts thrashing Empoli 3-0, while La Dea played out a 1-1 draw away to AS Roma. Meanwhile, these two sides faced each other exactly a month ago in the Italian top flight, where the Rossoneri were beaten in dramatic circumstances, with Luis Muriel’s 95th-minute winner earning Gian Piero Gasperini’s men a 3-2 victory at Gewiss Stadium.

Milan bring fine form into the mid-week encounter, having not tasted defeat in their last six fixtures in all competitions, recording five wins in the process. After the 2-2 league-draw away to Salernitana before the Christmas break Stefano Pioli’s men secured three successive top flight wins against the likes of Sassuolo, Cagliari and Empoli with an aggregate scoreline of 8-1. Their last success came away to the Blues on Sunday thanks to three unanswered goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Olivier Giroud and Chaka Traore at Stadio Carlo Castellani. The result helped the Rossoneri to move to 39 points from 19 Serie A-games, nine adrift of leaders Inter Milan and six clear of fourth-placed Fiorentina. Meanwhile, the 2022 Serie A champions have struggled in the Coppa for decades, their only triumph came almost half a century ago in 2003, but they did come up just short in 2016 and 2018, losing finals to Juventus on both occassions.
Atalanta, on the other hand, started the New Year with a 3-1 victory over Sassuolo in the previous round of the Coppa Italia thanks to Charles De Ketelaere’s brace and one goal from Aleksai Miranchuk. Gasperini’s side then traveled to Stadio Olimpico for their top flight fixture against Roma on Sunday and shared the spoils despite taking an early lead through Teun Koopmeiners’ eighth-minute opener. It was another away game without a win for the Orobici as they have won just one of their six on the road domestically. Meanwhile, Atalanta, like Milan have lost two Coppa Italia finals themselves in recent years, failing at the final hurdle in both 2019 and 2021.
