Real Madrid are currently occupying top spot in the La Liga Santander having collected 48 points from 19 games, level on points with second-placed Girona. Los Blancos secured their 15th league-win of the season against Mallorca at the start of this month thanks to Antonio Rudiger’s lone goal 12 minutes from time. And then, on Saturday Carlo Ancelotti’s side extended their winning run run five games across all competitions courtesy of defeating fourth tier side Arandina 3-1 in the Copa del Rey clash. A much changed Los Vikingos netted three goals in the second half thanks to efforts from Joselu, Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo, while La Arandina found late consolation through Nacho’s 93rd-minute own goal. Ancelotti’s men will now turn their attention to the Spanish Super Cup, a competition that they have won twice since the four team format was introduced in the 2019-20 season.
Atletico, on the other hand, are currently sitting at the fifth spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 38 points from 19 games, level on points with fourth placed Athletic Bilbao but separated by goal-difference. Colchoneros have won only one of their last four league-games, getting the better of Sevilla 1-0 before the Christmas break. Meanwhile, on their return to action on January 3, Simeone’s men lost 3-2 against surprise title-challengers Girona (4-3) in the top flight despite the fact that Alvaro Morata netted a hat-trick. Three days later, Atletico got the better of second-tier side Lugo in the Copa del Rey thanks to Angel Correa’s effort and Memphis Depay’s brace. They will now turn their attention to a third appearance in the four-team format of the Super Cup.
