Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is still very much optimistic about his side’s top-four finish despite sharing the spoils against Liverpool on Saturday. Spurs and the Reds played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield, and the result did no good to both the teams. Jurgen Klopp’s side has now put Manchester City in charge in the title race and Spurs missed the chance to leapfrog Arsenal into the fourth spot. Son Heung-Min’s goal early in the second half put Spurs ahead before Luis Diaz leveled things up late on. It was an evenly contested match between two sides who play contrasting styles of football.

Tottenham are now just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who will play Leeds United on Sunday. “There are three games to go for us, four games for Arsenal,” Conte said. “Not easy for us, not easy for Arsenal. In November, not many people could believe Tottenham could fight to the end for the Champions League. On Thursday, we have an important game, a London derby against our rival, our rival in this race. I want to get the points because it is important to have hope of the Champions League. We are still in the race for the Champions League.”

Spurs were threatening from counter-attacks

As expected, it was Liverpool who started the game brightly, dominating ball possession and pushed Spurs deep into their own half. The Reds’ best chance of the opening half came from Virgil van Dijk, both from left wing corners. The Dutch defender missed the target with the first when left unmarked before striking the crossbar with a more difficult chance towards the end of the first half. But spurs were equally threatening from counter-attacks. Kane played the ball to Son, on the left channel The South Korean laid it to Pierre-Emile Hojberg, whose right-footed drive from outside the box struck the bottom of the post and went out.

Son’s opening goal

Spurs took the lead in the 56th minute courtesy of yet another well-worked breakaway move. Emerson Royal played a long-ball from the midfield to find Kane outside the box. The Englishman controlled the ball beautifully before setting up an unmarked Ryan sessegnon on the left side of the box and the wing-backs first-time low cross was slotted home by Son from in front of goal. It was a well worked team goal and the Reds struggled to cope with their quick transition from defence to attack. Meanwhile Diaz’ deflected effort from outside the box on 74 minutes made the score 1-1.

We had the chance to win the game: Conte

On the game, the Italian coach said: “It is not easy to play in this moment against an amazing team, especially at Anfield with lots of noise. It is not simple. For sure, to have a good result was positive. On the other hand, I think maybe we have to be a bit disappointed. I have seen, in the eyes of my players, disappointment because we had the chance to win the game. But I repeat, a good performance. I asked my players to be good defensively and I don’t think we conceded any chances. We conceded a goal to a deflection. With the ball, I asked my players to show courage, because Liverpool press you in a good way. If you can play through that you can find space and have chances to score.”
