Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson suffered a dislodged tooth but re-entered the pitch to help his side earn a dominant victory against Arsenal. The 30-year-old was making a long awaited return to the Magpies’ starting line-up having spent the last five month on the sidelines with a calf injury. The Englishman put in a strong performance to help his side secure a 2-0 win and the result handed a huge blow to Arsenal’s Champions League qualification dreams. He was heavily involved in the hosts’ impressive start but midway through the first half, ran to the touchline with his front tooth seconds away from falling out altogether.

But rather than going off, Wilson showed great determination to get back into the thick of action and played a crucial role in giving Newcastle the lead in the 55th minute at St. James’ Park. Wilson burst into the box, trying to get on the end of Joelinton’s cross from the left. But Arsenal defender Ben White, under pressure from Wilson, put the ball inside his own net while trying to cut the cross.

We’re keeping the ball better: Wilson

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Wilson said: “It was an unbelievable atmosphere. Early on in the season everyone wrote us off and we were relegated by Christmas time. But we’ve dug deep and proved everybody wrong. I’ve noticed a difference [coming back into the team]. I’m getting a lot more chances and we’re keeping the ball better. I watched Arsenal the other night and I knew their centre-backs had injury problems. As a striker I was licking my lips. I’ve worked so hard [to get back to fitness]. When you’re out injured you want to come back and make a difference.”

Newcastle are assured of survival

Wilson was constantly putting pressure on the central defenders with his pace and physical prowess and Newcastle deservedly scored their second of the night through Bruno Guimaraes in the 85th minute. It was a very dominant performance from Eddie Howe’s side and they could have scored more goals had it not been for some impressive saves by visiting keeper Aaron Ramsdale. The result helped the Magpies to move to 12th spot with 46 points from 37 games. Howe’s side are assured of English top-flight football for next season and will face Burnley in their final match of the season next week.
