Son Heung-min scored a brace as Tottenham Hotspur beat Leicester City 3-1 in the Premier League fixture on Sunday. The South Korean has been in superb form this term and he had admitted it’s always a dream to win the Golden Boot award. He has netted 19 goals in 31 league appearances so far and only Mohamed Salah, who has scored 22 goals, is above him in the top scorers list. Meanwhile it was Spurs’ first win in three games. Antonio Conte’s side was defeated 1-0 by Brighton before being held to a goalless draw by Brentford. Son was the star performer against the Foxes as he provided the assist for Harry Kane’s opener before slotting home from Dejan Kuluisevski’s assist and completing his brace with a brilliant curler.

Son coming out of Kane’s shadows

After going two matches without registering a single shot on target, Spurs desperately needed a performance like this to boast their morale and Son led from the front. This season, Son has certainly come out of Kane’s shadows and is becoming Spurs’ leader in attack. Despite consistently delivering good performances for Spurs, he is often under-rated. Most of the media attention has been on Kane, rightly so, because of the number of goals he has been scoring for both club and country. To Kane’s credit, he kept delivering season after season, and the England captain was often regarded as the torchbearer of the London club. But it would be harsh to say that Kane has single-handedly carried Spurs forward.

Kane drops deep allowing Son to exploit space up front

This season, Kane’s role seems to be slightly tweaked, and now he seems to be more of a game maker rather than the goal-scorer. Kane often drops deep allowing the likes of Son and Kulusevski to exploit the free space created by him and both of them are doing it very efficiently. Spurs’ second goal scored against the Foxes was once again the combination of Son and Kulusevski. The Swedish international played a nice little through ball to find the run of Son, inside the box, and the South Korean made no mistake as he slotted home on the turn. Few moments later, Kulusevski cut inside from the right and laid the ball to Son outside the penalty area, the 29-year-old shifted the ball to his left foot and unleashed a beautiful curler that dipped just below the crossbar and went past a helpless Kasper Schmeichel into the far top corner.

Cristiano Ronaldo is just below Son

With four more games remaining, the race for the golden boot is heating up. Cristiano Ronaldo is just below son with 17 scalps to his name and if the South Korean continues his superb goal-scoring form, he will certainly challenge for the award. No Asian player has ever won the Premier League golden boot award and if Son could do it, it would be historical. As of now, he is the only Asian to have reached the 50 goal-mark and Manchester United legend and his countryman Park Ji-Sung is a distant second with 19 strikes in 154 appearances. While speaking to BBC sport after the match, when asked about the golden boot award, he said :”It’s not important for me. Scoring goals is really good but you can’t score alone. You need the team, If I get the chances then I will try to score. The Golden Boot is always a dream but the team is most important.”
