Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-Min has hit the 20-goal mark in the 2021-22 Premier League season when he netted the opener against Liverpool on Saturday. The South Korean has been in stunning form of late, having found the back of the net nine times in his last seven games. While star-striker Harry Kane has flattered to deceive in front of goal at some points during the campaign, Son is having his finest scoring streak for Spurs since his arrival in London in August 2015. Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (22) has scored more goals than Son in this season’s top flight, with Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo only one behind with 18. Meanwhile Son was the star performer in the 3-1 win against Leicester City last week.

None of Son’s 20 goals came from penalties

The South Korean provided the assist for Kane’s opener before slotting home from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross and then completed the hat-trick with a brilliant left-footed curler from outside the box. He continued his goal-scoring form to Anfield and broke the deadlock on 56 minutes when he finished off a brilliant breakaway move. Impressively none of Son’s 20 goals this season has come from penalty spot, and he has now become just the second Spurs player to hit the 20-goal mark in Premier League without penalties.  Gareth Bale was the first won to achieve the feat during his first season at Whit Hart Lane in 2013-13.

Son has come out of Kane’s shadows

The former Bayern Leverkusen man has now struck 128 goals and provided 73 assists in 32 appearances for Tottenham since his arrival in 2015. Despite being a consistent goal-scorer for Spurs in the last couple of seasons, the 29-year-old is often under-rated and has been in the shadows of English superstar, Harry Kane. But, this campaign, surprisingly Kane hasn’t been at his usual best having scored just 13 goals in 34 league appearances, which isn’t a great number by his high standards.  Son has become the main striker in Spurs’ attack and his combination with Kane and January signing Kulusevski is proving to be decisive in the club’s race for the Champions League qualification.

Antonio Conte’s system suits Son

This season, Kane’s role seems to be slightly tweaked, and he is now more of a game maker, rather than the goal-scorer. Kane often drops deep allowing the likes of Son and Kulusevski to exploit the free space created by him. Son is quick, has very good dribbling ability and is supremely efficient in front of goal. Meanwhile Antonio Conte’s 3-5-3 system is working very well for Son and the counter-attacking football suits the south Korean. Tottenham are now just just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who will take on Leeds United on Sunday. With three more games remaining and one of those against the Gunners next week, Conte’s side is very much in the race for a top-four finish.
