Everton vs Manchester United: 'It's going to be very difficult now to be in the top four,' says United's David de Gea after the 1-0 loss

Anthony Gordon's first-half strike handed United their third defeat in five games across all competitions and they are now languishing at the seventh spot, six points adrift of the Premier League top four.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea feels it is going to be very difficult for them to be in the top four after the 1-0 Premier League loss against Everton on Saturday. Anthony Gordon’s first half strike gave relegation-battling Everton the much needed three points while the Red Devils were left languishing at the seventh spot, six points adrift of the top four. Meanwhile it was United’s third defeat in five games.

Although United started the match on the driving seat, forcing a couple of saves from Everton keeper Jordan Pickford early in the match, the hosts took the lead mid-way through the first half. Gordon’s shot from the edge of the box deflected off Harry Maguire and went past a wrong-footed De Gea into the back of the net.

After the goal, Everton looked the better side as they maintained their discipline at the back and United lacked creativity to open up the opposition defence.

“We don’t create, that’s the problem. We don’t even create proper chances to score. I don’t know what to say, to be honest,” De Gea told BT Sport.

“We’re not good enough, that’s for sure. It’s going to be very difficult now to be in the top four.”

United came into the match on the back of a lacklustre 1-1 draw against Leicester City and once again Ralf Rangnick’s side looked clueless going forward. Meanwhile Everton, who had just two full days of recovery after the cruising 3-2 loss against Burnley, played with more energy and enthusiasm.

“We knew before they were struggling, but how difficult it is to play here even when they are not in a good mood, but they play with more desire,” he said.

“They played on Wednesday, they were tired, they were a bit nervous, you could feel it, and even with that we lose the game.

“Of course it’s not the perfect atmosphere. But you could see they were tired, they were nervous, and come on, they keep going and keep fighting to win. They had more desire than us. That is not acceptable, and it’s very sad to lose today.”

The Red Devils will next face Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday before traveling to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
