Everton defeated Manchester united 1-0 in the Premier League fixture at Goodison Park on Saturday. Anthony Gordon scored the lone goal of the match mid-way through the first half while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made some fine saves to maintain the slender lead. Meanwhile the Red Devils, who are close to appointing Erik ten Hag as their new manager, struggled to find their rhythm and never looked a real threat going forward.

Manchester United started the match on the driving seat as Pickford was forced to make the first save from Marcus Rashford after Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick was half-cleared. And then, Ronaldo’s drive went just wide of Pickford’s right upright. Few minutes later, Rashford got on the end of a beautiful Bruno Fernandes cross, but Pickford once again made a brilliant save.

Gordon’s goal

Everton took a bit of time to get going and took the lead, against the run of play from their first real attack of the game on 27 minutes. Gordon latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a right-foot shot that deflected off Harry Maguire and went past a wrong-footed David De Gea into the back of the net.

Immediately after the goal, Micahel Keane’s header from Gordon’s free-kick went over the bar. Richarlison tested De Gea from the edge of the box. Manchester United were pushed to the back foot and the visiting boss Ralf Rangnick was forced to make an early change, Paul Pogba came in for Fred, who picked up an injury.

The Reds were struggling to find a way through the Everton defence and Rangnick made double substitutions on the hour mark, introducing Juan Mata and Anthony Elanga on for Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford.

Everton made four-points clear of drop-zone

Meanwhile Everton maintained their discipline at the back and didn’t try to do anything silly. Gordon went clear on the right flank but couldn’t find Richarlison with his low cross. Pogba forced a decent save from Pickford with a dipping shot from outside the area before Ronaldo collected Harry Maguire’s header back across goal for one last effort, but once again Pickford made the save to help his team secure all three points.

The win helped Frank Lampard’s slide to move four-points clear of the relegation zone. Meanwhile United suffered another blow to their flickering hopes of a top-four finish.
