Two-time Olympics medalist PV Sindhu, Srikanth Kidambi, HS Prannoy, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will spearhead India's badminton team at the postponed Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
The selection of The Indian team for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022 has been announced by the Badminton Association of India. From September 23 to October 8, the event is planned to occur. Due to their rankings the shuttlers who were in the top 20 automatically qualified for the Asian Games.
Two-time Olympics medalist PV Sindhu, Srikanth Kidambi, HS Prannoy, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will spearhead India’s badminton team at the postponed Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games. Along with other players like Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen and Ashmita Chaliha. India’s 19-person squad was chosen following a four-day selection process at the Jwala Gutta Academy of Excellence in Hyderabad.
Ten male players and nine female shuttlers make up the lineup. Along with Sen and the national champion Mithun Manjunath, Srikanth, who took home silver at the 2021 World Championships, and HS Prannoy will compete in the men’s singles competition. In the men’s doubles competition, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will square off against one another, and Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun will also line up next to one another.
PV Sindhu, the 2019 world champion, is among the top female athletes. Along with Chalila, who won the selection event, Anupama Upadhyaya, and Malvika Bansod were also selected who will compete in the singles event. The women’s doubles teams are comprised of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly on one side and Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto on the other. India is currently ranked as the ninth-best badminton nation in Asian Games history, even though it has only won one silver and nine bronze medals so far. This year’s Games will feature badminton from September 28 through October 7 after it was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions in China.
Trials were used to choose the badminton team for the Asian Games. Based on their world rankings, six shuttlers—PV Sindhu, Treesa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand, HS Prannoy, Chirag Shetty, and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy—made the cut. The full team is below:
