Satwiksairaj Rankireddy is an Indian shuttler who specializes in doubles events. He was born on August 13, 2000, in Amalapuram, East Godavari District, in Andhra Pradesh. The right-handed athlete is one of the prominent badminton players in India currently. Satwik and his partner Chirag Shetty are presently the world no.5 ranked men’s doubles players of the world according to Badminton World Federation rankings.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy started playing badminton at the age of six. His father Kasi Viswanath was also a state-level badminton player and taught him the sport initially before enrolling him at the Gopichand Badminton Academy in 2014 where Pullela Gopichand was the prime coach. There, Satwik tried his hands at both singles and doubles events but ultimately went with doubles as his primary event.
At first, he was paired with Krishna Prasad Garaga at the junior level. However, it was Tan Kim Her, the Malaysian coach, who decided to partner Satwiksairaj with Mumbai lad Chirag Shetty. Chirag was the partner of Arjun MR back then and the pair had defeated Satwik and Krishna in the 2014 India Junior International to clinch the gold. Tan Kim Her, though, had other plans as he thought that Satwik and Chirag, if paired together, will become a formidable duo. The pair have then emerged to become the most dependable men’s doubles pair in India.
Since becoming a pair, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have clinched the Thailand Open 2019, Indian Open 2022, Commonwealth Games 2022, French Open 2022, Swiss Open 2023, and Badminton Asia Championships 2023 titles. Alongside these titles, the pair have also played an integral role in India’s triumph at the Thomas Cup 2022 and the mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games 2018 (gold) and 2022 (silver).
