Tai Tzu-Ying is a badminton player from Taiwan. She rose to the top of the women’s singles rankings at the age of 22 and has held that position for the most time period (i.e. 214 weeks) in BWF history. Tai won the gold medal at the 2017 Summer Universiade and the 2018 Asian Games. In addition to this, she also won a silver medal in the women’s singles competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She has won the All England Open three times as well as the BWF Superseries, which is a year-end competition. She has also won three Asian Championship championships (2017,2018 and 2023).
Tai’s career began in elementary school due to the support of her father who was a firefighter and the head of the badminton committee for Kaohsiung city. Tai started to play badminton in the fourth or fifth grade of primary school. From there, she went on to compete in the national ranking competition in the sixth grade, winning the second-division championship. This gave her an opportunity to play in the first-division matches. Incidentally, she was the youngest player to enter the first division. From the first division, she went on to visit the international team in the year 2007 and never looked back.
One of the unique things about Tai’s extraordinary success at the international level is due to her playing style which has been described as offensive while having an element of surprise. She is a highly skilled player who uses a variety of shots and angles to mask her strokes. Her extremely casual hitting style is really impressive.

She plays near the net well which she supplements well with a powerful backhand. Tai is also incredibly athletic and has a lot of stamina. According to Tai, she does not adhere to any particular play or style. She puts more emphasis on herself than her rival or any potential plans. Despite preferring to play a slow and endurance-based game, Tai has timed quick smashes. One of her fastest smashes was recorded at 360 km/h during 2016 All England Open quarterfinals. Many people have praised Tai for her immense talent and sly shotmaking, including BWF analyst Gillian Clark. Clark has frequently praised Tai’s skilful shotmaking and has called her one of the greatest players to watch in women’s singles.
