PV Sindhu is a top Indian badminton player. She was born on July 5 1995, in Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh. She was born to PV Ramana and P Vijaya. Both her parents were professional volleyball players and her father represented India in the Asian Games and he also received the Arjuna Award for is excellent contribution to sports in India. Sindhu was quite attached to sports and started playing badminton at the age of eight. Under the guidance of Mehboob Ali, she started learning the basics of badminton at the badminton courts of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. She then joined Gopichand Academy and went on to win several age category titles.
PV Sindhu rose to lime light very quickly as she won the bronze medal at the 2013 World Championship at the age of just 18. She the went on to become the most successful Indian badminton player at the BWF World Championships, having won an incredible five medals- one gold, two silvers, and two bronze medals. In 2019, the Indian shuttler overcame Japan’s Okuhara in 38 minutes to clinch at first world championship title. Becoming the first Indian to achieve the feat.
Sindu is only the second individual athlete from India to win two consecutive medals ay the Olympic games. She reached the final of the 2016 Rio Olympics before losing out to Spain’s Carolin Marin and had to settle for a silver medal. Four year’s later, the 27-year-old secured bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is also a three-time Commonweal Games medalist, having won a bronze, a silver and one gold medal. After settling for bronze and silver in 2014 and 2018 respectively, she finally clinched the title in 2022 in Birmingham courtesy of defeating Michelle Li of Canada in the final.
