Pullela Gayatri Gopichand is an Indian badminton player who plays alongside Treesa Jolly in the women’s doubles. Gayatri is the daughter of former badminton players P. V. V. Lakshmi and Pullela Gopichand. Naturally, the skill and finesse of this racquet sport runs in her bloodline. She was part of the national team that clinched the women’s team gold medal at the 2019 South Asian Games. Moreover, she clinched a silver in the women’s singles. However, the watershed moment in her career was the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Gayatri along with Treesa stunned everyone to bag the bronze medal in a thumping win against Chen Hsuan-Yu and Gronya Somerville in straight sets. Moreover, she also won a silver in the mixed team and a bronze medal in the women’s doubles.

Being born in a family full of star shuttlers, it was a very easy choice for the youngster. Subsequently, Gayatri and her brother Sai Vishnu started their training under the tutelage of their father. Apart from Pullela, both the siblings have also received training from coach Anil Kumar. Gayatri has also performed well in various junior international tournaments. Moreover, at the age of 15, Gayatri was already India’s No. 1 badminton player in the U-17 age group. Everything was going great and she even made it to the Asian Games team in Jakarta. However, due to Covid-19, the entire badminton world came to a standstill.

During this period, Gayatri Gopichand’s career also came to a standstill. However, 2021 proved to be a milestone in her career. Gayatri was mainly a singles player till then. But later, after being encouraged by her father and coach Arun Vishnu, she focused her attention towards the doubles event. Gayatri found a great partner in Trisha Jolly. Trisha joined Gopichand Academy just before the lockdown of 2020.

Consequently, Gopichand became the first woman Indian doubles specialist to make the semi-finals of the All England Open 21 years after her father’s feat. The young shuttler, Gayatri still has a long way to go to reach even a fraction of her father’s achievements. Gayatri’s main aim currently is to perform well at the Paris Olympics. In a recent interview, she said, “Winning an Olympic medal is my biggest goal”. Subsequently, from her performance so far, it can be expected that she will also gain popularity in the badminton world like her father.
