Kanta Tsuneyama is a young and energetic Japanese badminton player who plays in the men’s singles category. Although Kanta has made a decent progress at the international level, he is still aloof from the media glare. One of the prime reason is the absence of any gold medal in his international career so far. Kanta has so far created surprising upsets to defeat players like Christo Popov and Kidambi Srikanth. However, it is one thing to create upset and another to win the dangling golden metal.

Tsuneyama’s career started back in the Youth Olympics back in 2014 in Nanjing where he played in the mixed doubles and earned the silver medal. This was followed by mixed team bronze, boys’ doubles bronze and boys’ singles silver. However, he soon realised that singles is the area of his forte. Subsequently, Tsuneyama began competing in the singles category. On the other hand, he was part of the World Junior and Asia Mixed Team Championships where he won bronze and silver respectively. However, Tsuneyama’s ascent in badminton started post-2018 when he thrilled everyone with his skills at the 2018 Thomas Cup in Bangko. Japan however lost to heavyweights China (3-1) to get the silver medal. This was followed by his impressive performance at the Asian Games (2018) where he got bronze. He added to this impressive tally three more bronze from Thomas Cup (2020 & 2022) and Asian Games (2023).

Kanta has also won a bronze in the 2023 Sudirman Cup held in Suzhou. Likewise, Tsuneyama has faired decently well in the BWF World Tour. So far the Japanese international has won three gold and one silver. His first gold came in the Thailand Open (2018) followed by Korea Masters (2019) and French (2021). Tsuneyama would have claimed the Spain Masters, however his compatriot Kenta Nishimoto edged past him at the penultimate moment to hand him the defeat. However, everything is left in the annals of the past for Kanta. Naturally, the Japanese star will be one of the player to watch out for in the coming years.
