Craig Fulton is a renowned figure in field hockey who has represented South Africa as a player in international competitions, including the 1996 and 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2002 Men’s Hockey World Cup and is presently the head coach of the Indian men’s field hockey team. Coming from a family of hockey players, his brother, Grant, and his wife, Natalie, have also donned the national colors for South Africa. Fulton and his wife Natalie made headlines and marked a first in South African history by competing as a married couple in the Summer Olympics in 2004.
Fulton received his education at Pretoria Boys High School and Stellenbosch University. As a player and coach with Chelmsford in the Men’s England Hockey League from 1999 to 2005, he led the team to the Premier Division in 2004. During this period, he also coached at Felsted School. In 2005, he took on the role of director of coaching and senior men’s team player/coach at Pembroke Wanderers. Under his leadership, the team, featuring players like David and Conor Harte, won several national titles, including the All-Ireland Men’s Club Championship in 2006 and two Irish Senior Cups.
His coaching career took him back to South Africa between 2011 and 2014, where he served in various capacities, including assistant coach for the national women’s and men’s teams. He also coached the Northern Blues at the interprovincial level and worked with the University of Pretoria. His tenure as the Ireland men’s national field hockey team coach from 2014 to 2018 saw him lead the team to a third-place finish at the 2015 Men’s EuroHockey Nations Championship and qualifications for the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup. His exceptional coaching skills earned him the FIH Men’s Coach of the Year award when he coached Ireland. In 2018, he joined the Belgium team as an assistant coach, contributing to their victory in the Men’s Hockey World Cup in 2018 and their performance at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
