Satwik/Chirag regain no. 1 spot on BWF World Rankings

Satwik/Chirag have once again reached the pinnacle of the BWF World Rankings for a second time after the Asian Games gold.

After back-to-back impressive runs, there is some added joy for the number 1 men’s badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as they regain the top spot on the BWF World Rankings. Satwik/Chirag has started the year on a high as they reached the finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open.

The Asian Games champions reached the world no. 1 ranking for a second time after successive finishes in the Malaysia Open Super 1000 and India Open Super 750 badminton tournaments. The Indian duo had achieved its numero uno status for the first time after claiming the historic gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.

Satwik and Chirag, who had entered the India Open as the world no 2, lost a tense final against world champions Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae here on Sunday. Among other Indians, HS Prannoy moved a place to reach the world no 8, while Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and Priyanshu Rajawat stayed at 19th, 25th and 30th spots respectively.

Satwik/Chirag had earlier reached the World No. 1 rank after winning the historic gold medal at the Asian Games. This also had created a unique record in itself as they became the first Indian duo to win a gold in the continental showpiece.

Recent form of Satwik/Chirag

The World no. 1 ranking of the “brothers of destruction” as they are more popularly known amongst the netizens have carried on their golden form last year. Satwik/Chirag won their first title as a pair in the 2023 Swiss Open (badminton), beating the Chinese pair of Ren Xiangyu and Tan Qiang in the final.

The duo also crowned as Asian Champion after winning the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships held in Dubai. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their first BWF World Super 1000 title by defeating Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the final of 2023 Indonesia Open, thus becoming the first men’s doubles pair from India to win the event. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went on to win 2023 Korea Open defeating Indonesian Pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
