Soh Wooi Yik is a Malaysian badminton player who became the BWF World Champion along with his partner Aaron Chia in 2022. He is the son of Soh Goon Chup, a former badminton player from Malaysia. Moreover, his maternal uncle Soo Beng Kiang is also an Olympian and former badminton player for Malaysia. Naturally, Soh has got his immaculate on-court precision from his bloodline only. Yik started his humble badminton career at the age of 4. Subsequently, he was chosen to play for Kuala Lumpur when he turned 7. Later, when he was thirteen, he was offered a place to attend Bukit Jalil Sports School. Yik has been an integral part of the men’s doubles pairing in Malaysian badminton. Interestingly, he has been consistent with his pairing with Aaron Chia till now. This is a very unique feat because both players have to be in perfect sync.

The duo became the first-ever world badminton champions from Malaysia. Together, they also won a gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games. Subsequently, they also clinched the silver medal at the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships. This was followed by the bronze medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2023 BWF World Championships and 2022 Asian Games. Additionally, both Aaron and Soh have also added two successful bronze medals from the Sudirman Cup. The first bronze medal came in Vantaa back in 2021 while the next one came more recently back in Suzhou in 2023. But when it comes to the BWF World Tour, Soh has not found much success that he had anticipated from his performances in the mega-events.

So far, the Malaysian duo have managed to win only 1 title i.e. the Denmark Open in 2023. However, both Aaron and Soh have come runner-up on 6 different occasions. This starts with the Saar Lor Lux Open (2018) followed by the All-England Open (2019) then the Thailand Open (2020). In 2023 also they managed to reach the finals of the India Open, the Indonesia Open and the China Open only to be defeated in the finals. On the other hand when it comes to the BWF International Challenge Series, both of them have found no success in their initial days. It’s still early days for Soh Wooi Yik and as he develops more as a badminton player, Malaysia is sure to become a powerhouse in the doubles badminton once again.
