Born in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region, Gudaf Tsegay is a force to be reckoned with in international athletics. The athlete has dominated a range of events from the 800m to 10,000m races, even setting world records along the way. She became a sensation at only 16 when she set the world’s fastest under-18 record in the 1500m. At the Belgrade World Indoor Championships in 2022, Tsegay not only won gold in the 1500m event but also led an Ethiopian clean sweep, a first in the history of the championships. Tsegay’s time of 3:57.19 set a championship record, and her margin of victory was an incredible five seconds. This continued the legacy that included seven consecutive victories for Ethiopian women in the event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
In 2023, Tsegay started the year with a nearly record-breaking 3000m performance, missing the world record by just a fraction of a second. She also ran the second-fastest indoor mile of all time in Poland, reaffirming her status as one of the world’s premier athletes.
