Sifan Hassan was born in Adama, Oromia, Ethiopia on January 1, 1993. She comes from a lowly background, and her family has always encouraged her love of athletics. She continued her education in the field of nursing. Sifan first became interested in running as a young child and participated in regional competitions in Ethiopia.
She arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee in 2008, and a sports coach there instantly saw her talent. She started honing her abilities and pursuing her passion for middle-distance running with the help of her new coach. In 2013, she was granted Dutch citizenship. In the world of sports, Sifan Hassan has broken numerous records. Two world records are now in her possession, one of which is for the 5 km road race. In 2017 in Monaco, she set this record by finishing in 14 minutes and 14 seconds. She achieved her second world record in the mile event in 2019 with a time of 4:12:33.
On June 6, 2021, at Hengelo, she accomplished another world record performance by finishing the 10,000-meter race in 29:06:82. Letesenbet Gidey, who recorded a time of 29:01:03 to set a new world record for the 10,000-meter race, however, beat her record two days later. Sifan Hassan got off to a strong start in the Rio Olympics by winning her 1500-meter heats in a time of 4:06:64. Genzebe Dibaba, who won the race in four minutes and three seconds, beat her in the semifinals. However, the Dutch runner had tremendous disappointment in the Olympics finals, where she could only manage a fifth-place finish with a dismal time of 4:11:24.
