Sisay Lemma Kasaye, popularly known as Sisay Lemma, is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. Born on December 12, 1990, he began his journey in athletics at 17, often running without shoes due to limited resources. His career took a significant turn in 2012 when he clinched the title at the Maratona d’Italia. The following year, he earned a fifth-place finish at the Tiberias Marathon, prevailed at the Orlen Warsaw Marathon, and took fourth place in the Eindhoven Marathon.
Lemma’s achievements continued in 2015 as he began with a fifth-place finish at the Dubai Marathon in January with a time of 2:07:06. He went on to win the Vienna City Marathon in April, clocking in at 2:07:31, and later the Frankfurt Marathon in October, setting a personal record of 2:06:26. In 2016, he improved his record to 2:05:16 at the Dubai Marathon, finishing fourth. The following year saw him taking third place at the Dubai Marathon in January and fourth at the Chicago Marathon in October, although he did not complete the Boston Marathon in April.
The year 2018 for Lemma started with a fifth-place finish at the Dubai Marathon on January 26, where he achieved a personal best of 2:04:08. He later broke the Ljubljana Marathon record in October with a time of 2:04:58. Sisay Lemma’s personal best improved again at the 2019 Berlin Marathon, where he finished third with a time of 2:03:36. In 2020, Lemma finished third at the Tokyo Marathon on March 1 in 2:04:51 and also clinched third place at the London Marathon with a time of 2:05:45. He emerged victorious in 2021 when he won the London Marathon in 2:04:01. Most recently, at the Valencia Marathon 2023, Lemma set a new course record and personal best of 2:01:48. Lemma also has a personal best in the half marathon of 1:02:06, achieved in May 2015 in Göteborg.
