Eliud Kipchoge is a long-distance runner from Kenya who once specialized in the 5000 meters race but now competes in the marathon races. He is widely considered to be the greatest marathon runner in history and holds the world record with a time of 2:01:09 achieved at the Berlin Marathon in 2022. He also won the Olympic marathon titles in Rio Olympics 2016 and Tokyo Olympics 2020. Four out of the top five marathon times in history were run by him. Unsurprisingly, he won all ten marathons in which he participated between 2014 and 2019.

Eliud’s father passed away while he was a little boy, thus Kipchoge was brought up on a farm by his mother who was also a teacher. Growing up, he would jog to and from school, which is when he started running large distances. At 16, he met Kenyan runner Patrick Sang, who later served as his long-term coach. During the 5,000-meter race at the 2003 World Championship, Kipchoge narrowly beat Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco to earn his first major victory. Afterward, Kipchoge won a bronze medal at the Athens 2004 Olympics and a silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in the 5000 meters.

Following his omission from the Kenyan Olympic team in 2012, Kipchoge switched his concentration to marathons. The next year, he participated in his first marathon in Hamburg. He won the race in 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 30 seconds. Shortly after, he competed in the Berlin Marathon and finished second.  Later, he went on to win marathons in Chicago Marathon (2014), Berlin Marathon (2015), 2017, 2018, and 2022, and London Marathon (2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019). At the Berlin Marathon in 2022, Kipchoge again beat his previous world record of 2 hr 1 min and 39 sec (2018) time and established a new record, 30 secs lesser than the previous timing.
