The WWE Women’s Championship was the sole championship that changed hands during Saturday’s SummerSlam, and that was when Iyo Sky cashed in on Bianca Belair shortly after she had reclaimed it from Asuka. In addition, we saw Logan Paul cheat to beat Ricochet, Shayna Baszler beat Ronda Rousey, LA Knight win the Battle Royal, and both Gunther and Seth Rollins keep their singles titles. Jey Uso was defeated by Roman Reigns after Jimmy Uso betrayed his brother. The red brand repercussions from this past weekend’s events was addressed in this week’s Raw, which also prepared the audience for Payback on September 2.

Cody Rhodes Opening Segment

Cody Rhodes appeared to start things off after a video summarizing everything from SummerSlam. In addition to discussing his victory over Brock Lesnar on Saturday, he displayed a photo of the two of them shaking hands. When Seth Rollins finally entered the ring with him, he urged that they play another match, but before Rhodes could react, The Judgement Day came to an end. Damian Priest claimed that because he is in possession of the Money in the Bank briefcase, he controls what happens with the titles on Raw.

Initially not part of the gang, Finn Bálor suddenly materialized to assault Rollins while Priest and Dominik Mysterio pursued Rhodes. Sami Zayn came to the rescue and assisted in dispersing the mob. For the segment’s conclusion, Rhodes suggested a six-man tag match for later in the evening. It was all good, but it definitely didn’t need to take up the opening 20 minutes of the event.

Matt Riddle vs Tommaso Ciampa vs Ricochet vs Chad Gable

This contest was billed as a consolation contest between four men who, according to Adam Pearce, haven’t exactly had the best of luck lately. The response from the audience demonstrated that Chad Gable is from Minnesota. Gable suplexed three Superstars at a Tower of Doom location. WWE will have a hard time persuading fans that anyone will break GUNTHER’s Intercontinental Championship record given that he is only 30 days away from it. Gable was able to celebrate with his small kid, who was sporting an identical singlet, in addition to winning in his hometown.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs Bronson Reed

Three weeks ago, Shinsuke Nakamura most definitely turned heel, yet fans and WWE are now acting as though it never happened. You could tell Bronson Reed would lose because of the constant pressure Michael Cole and Wade Barrett applied to him throughout the contest. An hour without commercials began with the first break five minutes early. As Nakamura eventually prevailed with two Kinshasas, the crowd became extremely engaged.

Shayna Baszler vs Zoey Stark

Before Becky Lynch could finally speak, she spent an eternity in the ring. Even if Zoey Stark’s promo had some issues and she was subjected to “what” chants, it was still a big improvement. She will perform better if she has more “sink or swim” time to cut these promos. Shayna Baszler was wearing a cast and had a real black eye. She undoubtedly appeared to be fighting last night, but the Ford Field crowd didn’t seem to like it.

Becky Lynch was ringside during this contest and drank a cup of lemonade. Prior to losing the match, Zoey Stark went out of her way to let Becky Lynch divert her attention. Becky wasn’t at fault for this. Backstage, Sami Zayn, who was sporting an elbow tattoo that resembled John Cena, was attacked by Finn Balor’s best friend JD McDonagh. As a result, three of the four WWE tag team champions have retired due to injuries.

Otis vs Ludwig Kaiser

Ludwig Kaiser attempted to rizz Maxxine backstage but was rejected. Otis, a young man from the Midwest, received similar treatment. Giovanni Vinci’s outside influence helped Kaiser win. The rescue by Chad Gable elicited another enthusiastic response.

The New Day vs Viking Raiders

Miz made one of his signature ferocious promos, which makes him look babyface. LA Knight responded with a forceful advertisement of his own on how Miz is safe while Knight is risky. Although they occasionally stumble over their lines, it was a wonderful promo exchange. Knight was called an Attitude Era fanatic by Miz, who took the matter personally. By the end of this promo, the public had decided to support LA Knight, and Knight eventually killed Miz with a Blunt Force Trauma.

The Viking Raiders were covered by Michael Cole before they emerged, but the New Day responded to their open challenge, sending Erik and Ivar back to square one. The excitement for The New Day’s comeback was palpable. The New Day’s two members appeared to be younger yet maintained their rhythm. They mentioned the Street Profits in a backstage ad, which could be a portent of things to come. The New Day and/or the Street Profits should replace Zayn and Owens as the tag team champions if WWE is forced to give up the titles due to their injuries.

The Judgment Day vs Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins and Shinsuke Nakamura

Shinsuke Nakamura joined Rollins and Rhodes’ team backstage, although WWE seems to hint that he would later flip on Rollins. Raquel Gonzalez attacked Rhea Ripley before the bout began as the two women fought before the break. Mike Cole pointed out The WWE documentary on Peacock that has received the most viewers so far this year is Becoming Cody Rhodes. Although this was a strong main event, all the tag team main events on Raw have begun to resemble one another.

Sami Zayn stepped in to help the babyfaces, elbow tape and all, which gave Cody Rhodes the opportunity to defeat Finn Balor by using the MITB briefcase. Following the bout, Rhodes and Rollins continued to argue before reluctantly shaking hands. To confirm his heel switch, Shinsuke Nakamura predictably took out Rollins with a Kinshasa.

Overall Show

Although WWE didn’t seem overly eager to set up anything for Payback, this week’s Raw did a fantastic job of covering everything from SummerSlam. Stark, Baszler, Knight, and The Miz all delivered excellent promos, and the Fatal 4-Way match that opened this week’s action was a superb demonstration of several wrestling philosophies.

It was also wonderful to watch Kingston make a triumphant comeback after a protracted absence due to injuries. His and Woods’ smiles during their interview backstage were evident. Overall, this was a passable edition of Raw that introduced us to some intriguing new storylines that will probably result in PPV matches soon.
