In the world of professional wrestling, the journey to superstardom is often a long and winding road. WWE President Nick Khan understands this well and he believes that patience is not only a virtue but also a crucial investment in talent development. In a recent interview with Bill Simmons, Khan highlighted the success story of “NXT” North American Champion Dominik Mysterio as a prime example of how patience can pay off.

Khan began by reflecting on his tenure with WWE, which started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, Dominik Mysterio the son of wrestling legend Rey Mysterio was a young wrestler who had yet to find his footing in the company. While he was perceived as Rey’s son and a likable individual, his character wasn’t resonating with the audience.

However, Khan pointed out that the key to Dominik’s transformation into a successful character was the patience exhibited by WWE’s top decision-makers, including Vince McMahon and Paul Levesque (Triple H). He drew parallels to the career trajectory of Roman Reigns, noting that there was a time when fans were not fully embracing Reigns as the heroic face of the company. It was during the COVID-19 era that Reigns returned as a heel, leading to a resurgence in his popularity.

Dominik Mysterio’s journey followed a similar path. Initially positioned as the virtuous son of Rey Mysterio, the character lacked the necessary spark. However, WWE’s creative team and talent development persisted, recognizing the potential for a transformation. The decision to turn Dominik into a heel character proved to be a game-changer.

Khan emphasized that Dominik Mysterio is still in his early 20s with immense potential ahead of him. He believes that Dominik can stay healthy and receive creative opportunities. He has the potential to become a huge star in WWE. The key according to Khan lies in allowing talents to evolve and find their voices on the microphone a crucial aspect of character development.

The WWE President cited several examples of talents benefiting from the company’s commitment to their growth. Alongside Dominik Mysterio names like LA Knight, Jey Uso, and Jimmy Uso have all seen their careers flourish as WWE’s leadership chose not to give up on them. Khan’s message is clear sticking with talents and giving them the chance to shine can lead to remarkable transformations and success stories.

Khan also drew parallels between Dominik Mysterio’s journey and the iconic careers of WWE legends Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. He noted that even these megastars faced their share of setbacks and challenges before achieving superstardom. The Rock’s early days in WWE as Rocky Maivia were met with indifference from the audience. However, a pivotal moment at Madison Square Garden led to the birth of The Rock’s character, propelling him to legendary status.

Similarly, Khan referenced Steve Austin’s famous “Austin 3:16” promo at the 1996 King of the Ring event. This promo marked the turning point in Austin’s career and solidified his place in WWE history. Khan’s point is that every successful WWE career often experiences a moment when everything clicks and catches fire.
