In the long run, Seth Rollins' rise to power and defeat of Roman Reigns wouldn't only be a triumph for history books.

Roman Reigns ought to be deposed by Seth Rollins. It’s a straightforward assertion that many fans of professional wrestling have probably made at least once. Simple at first glance, but incredibly intricate when you consider the connections between the historical events and the plot, as well as the most recent evidence. And the evidence is simply overwhelming. Rollins may be the most naturally dominant wrestler competing today. Fans can shout and cheer about CM Punk’s comeback and LA Knight’s Rock-Lite promos, but it’s all about Rollins.

Rollins is the one

Call it innate evidence. The one is Rollins. For a very long time, NXT has been far behind AEW in terms of popularity, and it suffered when put up against AEW head-on. Rollins’ single collapse broke records. It adds to Rollins’ long list of accomplishments. This is a man who, just a few years ago, had to drastically alter his persona due to his unfortunate rivalry with Bray Wyatt and The Fiend persona. He also initially struggled when collaborating with Becky Lynch before finally finding his footing again.

But once he got going, he took off like a rocket, elevating everyone he worked with and winning over crowds whether he was attempting to play the heel or not. This was happening as Reigns monopolized both titles, despite recognising his performance arguably deserved a top championship.

Highest NXT viewers

These are also highly precise comparisons. After all, the man recently attracted 773,000 people to an episode of NXT, giving the programme its biggest viewership in two years and its highest rating ever in the 18-49 age group. His championship defense against Bronn Breakker also briefly approached the one million dollar mark. Knight is entertaining, and Punk’s return on Collision’s premiere episode generated significant ratings as well, though there may be diminishing returns moving forward—not every week will see a major return.

Plot

Everything fits too perfectly in terms of the plot. If WWE wants something that touches nearer to the family-based narrative rather than a random Cody Rhodes comeback and doesn’t think Jey Uso is “worthy” of the moment that is ending a 1,000+ day reign and one of the best pro wrestling stories ever, Rollins is the obvious choice. In the long run, Rollins’ rise to power and defeat of Reigns wouldn’t only be a triumph for history books. It wouldn’t just satisfy casual and ardent admirers who are passionate about those historical things.

In this regard, Rollins—the former Architect—certainly appears to be following the ideal plan that will put him in a position to unseat Reigns and start a new chapter in one of the greatest rivalries and interconnected destinies the sport has ever experienced.
