In a surprising turn of events, Matt Riddle has bid adieu to WWE, bringing his whirlwind career both inside and outside the WWE ring to a merciful close. In a heartfelt tweet, Riddle announced his departure, expressing gratitude for the memories, opportunities, and unwavering support from his fans. He tweeted, “Just wanted to inform everyone that I’m no longer with WWE. Thank you for the memories and opportunities also thank you to all the fans for the support and love you give me every time I go out to the ring. See you all soon 🤙”

Riddle emerged as one of WWE’s most prominent stars, known for his quirky and carefree persona. Despite his comedic gimmick, he possessed the potential to ascend to the ranks of WWE’s top stars, akin to irreverent former world champions like Daniel Bryan and Rob Van Dam.

Matt Riddle vs Roman Reigns was a stunner

Riddle’s WWE Championship match against Roman Reigns, which aired on June 17, 2022, during SmackDown, drew impressive viewership numbers, surpassing 2.5 million viewers for its quarter-hour slot. This remarkable figure even outshone the opening quarter-hour featuring Vince McMahon, fresh from hush money allegations. Notably, it also eclipsed Reigns’ previous TV world title matches against Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens.

Riddle’s persona lent itself well to being a foil for an array of tough opponents with unusual pairings. Whether it was Butch (known as Pete Dunne in NXT), Timothy Thatcher, Drew McIntyre, or most notably, Randy Orton as part of the tag team RK-Bro, Riddle showcased his versatility. The duo of Riddle and Orton even secured the WWE tag team championship on two occasions.

Controversial departure

Riddle’s recent absence from television was attributed to reported health issues, but he also found himself embroiled in a controversy at JFK Airport. During the incident, the former United States and tag team champion alleged that he was sexually assaulted by an officer, a situation exacerbated by Riddle’s purported heavy intoxication at the time.

Regrettably, Riddle’s departure coincided with WWE’s ongoing efforts to reduce costs significantly. The company, under TKO Group Holdings, is undertaking measures to achieve substantial cost savings, leading to the release of several high-profile talents, including Matt Riddle, as they aim to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in savings.
