The Japanese national women’s team are in stunning form having not lost a single set in their last five games, and sit at the summit of the standings with 20 points.
Japan will play China in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League fixture on Sunday. The Japanese side is heading into the tie on the back of a dominant 3-0 win against Covid-hit Thailand side on Thursday. Thailand had eight players missing after contracting COVID-19 and Japan thrashed the inexperienced Thai side with a scoreline of 25-22, 25-16, 25-14. It was Japan’s sixth victory in seven games in the competition and they sit at the summit of the 16-team table with 20 points. The Japanese national women’s team are in stunning form having not lost a single set in their last five games.
China, on the other hand, are coming into the tie on the back of a 3-0 defeat against the mighty USA in the last match on Saturday. It was China’s second defeat in seven games in the competition so far. The scoreboard read 25-21, 25-23, 25-21. China sit at the third spot with 16 points, having won five matches. China are currently ranked third in the world and would be hoping to bounce back against the fellow Asian side.

In the preliminary round, 16 women’s teams will compete in pools of 8 teams under the revised format. During the pool stage, each team plays 12 matches. Eight teams will then advance to the competition’s final knockout round. The Finals will include the seven strongest teams, with the finals host – Turkey – entering the knockout round as the top-placed team. It will consist of eight matches in total – four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and bronze and gold medal matches.

Saturday featured six matches in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League Round 1. Serbia and Turkey were loggerheads in a close contest with the former side proving to be superior with a 25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13 (3-2) win. Meanwhile, Netherlands lost to Dominican Republic after taking a head start in the game 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 25-15, 7-15 (2-3). Bulgaria produced a dominating performance as they clinched a victory in straight sets to outclass Canada 26-24, 25-22, 25-21. Belgium, on the other hand, had a close encounter with Poland to emerge victorious after a 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 win. The other two matches are yet to take place.
