Thailand women’s national volleyball team will take on the USA in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League fixture on Saturday. The Asian side has had an impressive tournament so far and has managed to punch above its weight to register four wins from seven games and sit at the 7th spot in the standings with 12 points to their name.. Whereas USA, who are one of the favourites to advance to the finals of VNL in Turkey, occupy the second spot with 18 points. USA won six of their seven games so far.
Thailand were thrashed 3-0 by Japan in their last outing on Friday. The scoreline read 25-22, 25-16, 25-14. It was Thailand’s second successive setback in the WVNL in Quezon City, the Philippines. The Thai’s are without eight players because of COVID-19 outbreak in the team and struggled to cope with the Japanese. Sarina Koga made 20 points for Japan while Chatchu-On Moksri was Thailand’s top scorer with 11 points. After the brilliant 3-0 win over Canada on Tuesday, the Thailand Volleyball Association announced that eight players contracted COVID-19. The sports governing body FIVB allowed Thailand to send five new players to replace the COVID-hit players.
USA beat China 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 in Pool 4 fixture on Saturday. The result helps U.S to leapfrog China to second spot in the 16-team table in the preliminary phase. Kathryn Plummer had a game-high 20 points for the U.S. Meanwhile, Team USA’s only defeat of the campaign came against Japan on June 6, when they were thrashed 3-0 by the Asian’s. Since then, the U.S have been unstoppable, not losing a single set in the next three encounters.

In the preliminary round, 16 women’s teams will compete in pools of 8 teams under the revised format. During the pool stage, each team plays 12 matches. Eight teams will then advance to the competition’s final knockout round. The Finals will include the seven strongest teams, with the finals host – Turkey – entering the knockout round as the top-placed team. It will consist of eight matches in total – four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and bronze and gold medal matches.

Serbia and Turkey were loggerheads in a close contest with the former side proving to be superior with a 25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13 (3-2) win. Meanwhile, Netherlands lost to Dominican Republic after taking a head start in the game 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 25-15, 7-15 (2-3). Bulgaria produced a dominating performance as they clinched a victory in straight sets to outclass Canada 26-24, 25-22, 25-21. Belgium, on the other hand, had a close encounter with Poland to emerge victorious after a 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 win. The other two matches are yet to take place.
