The 2023 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U19 World Championship will be the 18th edition of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U19 World Championship. This is the biennial international youth volleyball championship that features the under-19 female national teams of FIVB member federations. The FIVB is the world governing body of this sport. It will be held jointly in Croatia and Hungary. By the decision of the FIVB, this will be the first event with U19 national teams. In March 2022, it was decided to change the age category of the girls’ championship from U-18 and U-19. Athletes should be born on or after 1 January 2005.
Wednesday will see Italy take on Croatia in the Quarter-finals of the FIVB Volleyball Girls U19 World Championship. Italy is currently the World No. 1 in the Volleyball U 19 World Rankings. On the other hand, Croatia is ranked thirty-fifth in the Volleyball U 19 World Rankings. Heading into Wednesday’s match, Italy is coming after thrashing Egypt in the Round of 16 (3-0). On the other hand, Croatia won a nail-biter against Poland (3-2). The Italians will try to brush aside last edition’s finals and win the coveted gold medal this time around.
Originally, a total of 20 national teams were going to qualify for the final tournament. However, in January 2023, FIVB confirmed an increase in participating teams from 20 to 24. Croatia and Hungary which qualified automatically as the hosts. Other than that 19 other teams qualified through five separate continental competitions which had to be completed by 2022. The remaining 3 teams entered the competition by the Girls’ U19 FIVB World Ranking among the teams not yet qualified.
The draw for the composition of the pool took place on 31 March 2023 at the FIVB headquarters in Switzerland. The 24 teams were divided into four pools of six. Hosts Croatia and Hungary, as well as the top six teams in the current FIVB U19 girls’ world rankings, were seeded in the top two spots in each pool based on the serpentine principle.
