Manika Batra and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran will captain the women’s and men’s teams, respectively, at the ITTF World Team Championships Finals 2022, which begin on Friday in Chengdu, China. Sharath Kamal, a veteran, opted out of the event. At the world team championships, India’s table tennis team will be aiming for their first medal since independence. The Indian men’s and women’s teams qualified for the event via the Asian Championships in 2021. During the group stages of the ITTF World Team Championships 2022, each team will play the other in a round-robin format.

The men’s squad was placed in Group 2 alongside second seeds Germany, France, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. The women’s team is in Group 5 with Germany, Egypt, and the Czech Republic as fifth seeds. The top two teams in each group, as well as the four best-placed third teams in each group, will advance to the round of 16 in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Each tie will be made up of five singles matches, each of which will be a best-of-five game. The men’s squad is led by world No. 37 Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, who won bronze in singles at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Manika Batra (world No. 44) and Sreeja Akula (CWG 2022 mixed doubles gold medalist and national champion) will be a part of the women’s team.
