Irishman Ken Doherty is a seasoned snooker professional known for his versatility as a commentator and radio presenter. Before going professional in 1990, Doherty had an impressive amateur career, claiming the Irish Amateur Championship twice and winning both the World Under-21 and World Amateur Championships. His professional track record includes six ranking tournament wins, which comprises victory over Stephen Hendry in the 1997 World Snooker Championship, marking Hendry’s first defeat in a world final. Doherty nearly shattered the famous Crucible curse but fell short in the 1998 final against John Higgins and again in 2003 to Mark Williams. He has been a consistent performer in major tournaments, finishing as runner-up three times in the UK Championship and twice in the Masters, with a career tally of over 350 century breaks.

He continued this exceptional form into 2001, winning the Welsh Open and Thailand Masters consecutively and almost bagging a third at the Scottish Open.

The following seasons saw a return to form, with Doherty improving his rank from 44th to 30th, courtesy of his performances in the Shanghai Masters and Grand Prix. In the 2011-12 season, he ensured a semi-final berth at the Australian Goldfields Open, following a remarkable quarter-final victory over Mark Selby.

Ken Doherty continued competing and entered the Shanghai Masters in 2014 after winning three qualifying matches. He advanced to the last 32 at the UK Championship in 2014. A challenging encounter with Ronnie O’Sullivan in the second round of the UK Championship in 2018 resulted in him ultimately conceding victory to O’Sullivan after a fiercely contested match. At the end of the 2020 season, Doherty fell out of the top 64 and the professional tour.
