Ken Doherty is one of the renowned names in the world of snooker, hailing from Ireland. In addition, he is a sports commentator and radio host. His early days saw him clinching the Irish Amateur Championship on two occasions, and emerging victorious in both the World Under-21 and World Amateur Championships. His professional career began in 1990 and since then, he has earned victories in six ranking events, including a triumph at the World Snooker Championship in 1997 where he ended Stephen Hendry’s undefeated streak in the world finals.

Doherty narrowly missed out on conquering the so-called Crucible curse, reaching the 1998 final only to be edged out by John Higgins and faced defeat again in a 2003 final against Mark Williams. He was also the runner-up finishes in three UK Championships and two Masters tournaments. With over 350 century breaks in professional contests, Doherty has made a name for himself in the sport.

In 2009, Ken Doherty expanded his area to include commentary, offering insights from his extensive experience in the sport. The 1993 Welsh Open saw Doherty’s first major victory, helping him to enter the top 16 players worldwide, a status he maintained until the 2007-08 season. Doherty’s 1997 World Championship win at 27 years old made him one of the few non-UK players to claim the title. He earned back-to-back wins at the Welsh Open and Thailand Masters in 2001 and almost won a third consecutive title at the Scottish Open.

At the start of the 2007-08 season, he didn’t have a great start but found form at the Masters, overcoming both Mark Williams and Shaun Murphy to reach the semi-finals, where he lost to Mark Selby. In the 2009-10 season, Doherty climbed from 44th to 30th in the rankings, owing to strong performances at the Shanghai Masters and the Grand Prix. His qualification for the 2011-12 Australian Goldfields Open, where he reached the semi-finals, was a significant one as he claimed a victory over Mark Selby.

In 2014, Ken Doherty was battling through qualifiers and wildcards to make it to the Shanghai Masters, though he faced an early exit against Mark Selby. That season, he also advanced to the UK Championship’s last 32 before Ricky Walden stopped him on his way. Doherty’s attempts to qualify for the World Championship witnessed him defeat notable players, but Mark Davis ended his campaign. In the UK Championship in 2018, Doherty nearly upset defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, leading initially but ultimately losing in a close contest.

The World Championship 2020 qualifiers didn’t go his way, leading to Doherty dropping out of the top 64 rankings and the tour. Throughout his career, Doherty has stuck with the same warped cue, picked randomly years ago from a club rack. His voice has become familiar to snooker fans through his commentary for the BBC, starting in 2009. He also shares his passion for sports on radio shows, including a Saturday morning program on Sunshine 106.8FM.
