Lazio beat Venezia 1-0 courtesy of Ciro Immobile’s goal from the penalty spot in the Serie A fixture at Stadio Olimpico on Monday. Maurizio Sarri’s side came into this match only one point behind La Dea and the Giallorossi in the league table, so a win was vitally important for Lazio to keep pressure in the race for European qualification this season.

It was a slow start in Rome and it was a cagey affair in the first 30 minutes. Sergej Milinković-Savić’s free-kick went agonisingly wide before Felipe Anderson was released down the right channel by Immobile’s first-time overhead ball, but the Brazilian failed to hit the target.

After the break, immobile put the ball inside the net with a brilliant right-foot curler from Milinkovic-Savic’s assist but the goal was disallowed for off-side after VAR intervention. Meanwhile at the other end, Domen Crnigoj made a darting run down the right channel before forcing a save from Thomas Strakosha at the near post.

Lazio kept their heads up and pushed men forward for the goal and in the 55th minute were awarded a penalty after Crnigoj’s high-boot made contact with Luiz Felipe’s face. Immobile stepped up and drilled the ball into the bottom left corner to give the lead to the hosts.

Few minutes later, Luiz Alberto headed the ball down nicely to the path of Immobile outside the box, but the Italian striker’s first-time half-volley went over the crossbar.

The Biancocelesti comfortably controlled the remainder of the game, occasionally pushed for a second but remained solid at the back and kept yet another clean sheet.

The win helped Lazio to fifth in the Serie A standings, with 49 points from 29 games, seven points adrift of the top four.
