Fabian Ruiz scored an injury-time winner as Napoli defeated Lazio 2-1 in the Serie A fixture at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. Lorenzo Insigne had put Napoli in front two minutes after the hour-mark before Pedro netted a late equaliser for the hosts. Just when it looked like the points would be shared, Ruiz netted in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to help Luciano Spalletti’s side to 57 points from 27 games, and go joint top of the table with AC Milan. Meanwhile the defeat left Lazio at the seventh spot with 43 points from 27 games.

Lazio started the match on the driving seat as Luis Alberto got a golden chance to put his side in front early on, but the midfielder fired wide from Felipe Anderson’s assist. The Spanish footballer should have done better as he had enough space and time to pick his spot.

At the other end, Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha made a low, full-stretch diving save to his left to deny Piotr Zielinski from outside the box. The match proved to be an end-to-end affair as both sides pushed for the goal. Anderson’s powerful low drive from the edge of the box was denied by Ospina before Kalidoe Koulibaly reacted quicker than Alberto to clear the rebound.

Ruiz’ winner

Napoli finally broke the deadlock on 62 minutes, when Insigne’s effort from outside the box went past Strakosha and into the bottom corner. Napoli pushed for the second and thought they had got it when Insigne put the ball inside the net after Victor Osihen was denied by Strakosha. But the goal was ruled out for offside after VAR check.

Lazio fought back in the final period of the game as Pedro’s left-foot curler from the edge of the box forced a brilliant save from Ospina. And then, on 88 minutes, Pedro equlaised with a superb strike from outside the box. Alberto’s free-kick was headed clear by Amir Rahmani, only for Pedro to volley home past Ospina into the bottom corner.

Napoli wouldn’t give in, deep into stoppage-time, Eljif Elmas surged forward, spread the ball to Insigne on the left, who laid it off for Ruiz on the edge of the box. The Spanish midfielder unleashed a superb left-foot curler that went into the bottom corner.
