The IPL 2022 tournament is just about two weeks away. The tournament will begin with a repeat of the 2021 IPL final between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. In a sensational final in 2021 in Dubai, Chennai Super Kings scripted an incredible comeback and won the title by beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs. It was Chennai Super Kings’ fourth title under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. For Kolkata Knight Riders, it was their first loss in a final of the IPL.

The IPL 2022 is historic for several reasons. For the first time in a decade, 10 teams will be participating in the tournament. There will be two virtual groups of five teams each which will make the contest even more exciting. Rather than two separate groups, all the 10 teams will be playing each other but with a slight twist.

Let us take for example this group. Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans will be in one group. They will play with each other two times. In the other group, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals will play each other twice. Now, since Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are in one row, they will play each other twice. MS Dhoni’s team will play the other sides only once. That is how the 14 matches will be organized for each side.

Points Table in IPL 2022

With 10 teams in the fray, the points table in the IPL 2022 will have much more intensity. The structure of the points table does not change in IPL 2022. The top four teams make it to the playoff stage. Each team is awarded two points for the win. A match that is tied is decided by the Super Over.

Now, the teams that finish in the top two get an extra benefit. The playoff stage consists of the first Qualifier, Eliminator, and the 2nd qualifier before the final. The top two teams play Qualifier 1 while the third and fourth-placed teams play Eliminator. The one team that loses the eliminator is knocked out of the tournament. That team that wins goes into Qualifier 2. For the side that wins Qualifier 1, it goes straight into the final. The team that loses Qualifier 1 will play the winner of Eliminator in order to get a second chance at the final.

In the past, teams like Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings have utilized this well to ensure they sail into the final. In IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals finished in the top two but they lost to Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in both the qualifiers.
