Kolkata Knight Riders News: Shreyas Iyer Appointed Captain of franchise for IPL 2022 Tournament

Kolkata Knight Riders have made a big announcement in relation to their IPL 2022 campaign. The two-time IPL champions have appointed Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the team for this edition of the tournament. Iyer has had captaincy experience before, having led the Delhi Capitals for a couple of years. He is also been talked up as one of the future captains of the India side. This is in the event of the BCCI looking at life after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

There were speculations that Ajinkya Rahane could be captaincy material. He was taken by Kolkata Knight Riders at his base price of Rs 1 crore. But, in the end, this decision means that Shreyas Iyer will be a long-term captain. Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to regain lost ground after seven years after their last title.

Shreyas Iyer The Ideal Leader for KKR?

Speaking on the appointment for KKR, CEO Venky Mysore was impressed with the qualities of Iyer as a player and leader. “He (Iyer) has impressed one & all as a quality batsman at the highest level. We are confident that he will excel as a leader of Team KKR,” Venky Mysore said.

The head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Brendon McCullum said he was excited about the prospect of Iyer leading the side for IPL 2022. “Excited to have one of India’s brightest future leaders in Shreyas Iyer, take the reins at KKR. I have enjoyed Shreyas’ game and his captaincy skills from afar. I will now look forward to working closely with him to drive forward the success and style of play we want at KKR,” Brendon McCullum said.

When asked about the job of captaining the KKR side, Shreyas Iyer stated that captaincy bought out the best from players. “I am extremely honoured to have gotten the opportunity to lead a prestigious team like KKR. The IPL as a tournament brings the best players from different countries. I look forward to leading this great group of very talented individuals. I would like to thank the owners, management and support staff of KKR for giving me the opportunity to lead this team. Am confident that we will find the right synergies to achieve the team’s goals,” Iyer said. Kolkata Knight Riders have won the IPL in 2012 and 2014. However, in IPL 2021, Kolkata Knight Riders lost in the final to Chennai Super Kings. MS Dhoni’s team won their fourth title.
