Former India captain MS Dhoni is known for his brilliant cricketing brain, an outstanding finisher as well as his lightning-quick glove-work. Notably, MS Dhoni is the only captain to win all three ICC trophies – the T20 World Cup in 2007, World Cup win in 2011 and Champions Trophy win in 2013. However, he has so far given a lot of shock to fans with his decisions. Here are a few when his decision left fans as well as the cricketing world shocked and surprised.

When MSD retired from the Tests

MS Dhoni has a stellar career in the longer format for India. However, he had shocked one and all with his sudden Test retirement decision on December 30, 2014. Dhoni shared his decision after India’s 2014-15 Boxing Day Test against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. With India having already lost the series 2-0 after the drawn Test in Melbourne and one match to go in the four-match Test series, Dhoni decided to call it quits. He scored 4,876 runs in 90 Tests which came at 38.09 with a high score of 224. He played several memorable knocks at home (double-hundred against Australia, twin centuries against Sri Lanka and a century against the Proteas) whereas he played a vital role in India’s draw against England in the Lord’s Test in 2007. Alongside this, he scored 33 half-centuries in Tests. He smashed 78 sixes and did 294 dismissals in whites (most by any Indian keeper-batsman)as well.

When Dhoni stepped down as ODI and T20 captain

MS Dhoni left everyone surprised once again in January of 2017 when he decided to step down as ODI and T20 captain of the Indian men’s cricket team. India’s most successful captain has finished with 178 wins from 331 matches. He led India in 60 Tests, winning 27 and losing 18. In the white-ball cricket, Dhoni led India to 110 victories from 199 ODIs and 41 wins from 72 T20Is as well, having a win percentage of 53.78. However, he captained India in 331 international matches from 2007 to 2016, the most by any player. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting comes second with 324 matches as well. He took over the ODI captaincy from the veteran Rahul Dravid in 2007 and led the team from the front throughout the years.

Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket

MS Dhoni made everyone emotional with his retirement announcement on social media. “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired,” he wrote this on his Instagram post through which he announced his retirement. The video included his journey with Kishore Kumar’s ‘Mai Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon’, playing in the background as well. He played 350 ODIs with his highest score being 183 against Sri Lanka. Also referred to as ‘Captain Cool’, Dhoni’s calmness, brilliant captaincy on the field, agility behind the stumps and ability to finish matches guided India to win several matches as well. In over 500 International matches he played for India, he smashed more than 17000 runs and his contribution to world cricket will always be remembered by all.

MS Dhoni returns as CSK captain

CSK has had a rather forgettable journey in the IPL 2022 as the four-time IPL champions are currently at the bottom parts of the points table with two wins and six defeats in eight games. Ravindra Jadeja, who was appointed the captain just ahead of the tournament, has seen rock bottom. He has had a forgettable season with the bat, as well as with the ball as he has amassed just 112 runs and picked up just 5 wickets in 8 games he has played so far in the season. And, many believe the pressure of captaincy could be the reason as well. However, on April 30, he decided to step down from the captaincy. “Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game and has requested MS Dhoni to lead CSK,” an official communique from the CSK said on Friday (April 30). On the other hand, MS Dhoni guided CSK to win their fourth IPL title in 2021 and he was retained by the franchise ahead of IPL 2022 for Rs 12 crore as well. Even, he has been in a good form too. It will be interesting to see how his return to captaincy will change the fortune of CSK.
