Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has backed the team despite their seven consecutive defeats in IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. He stated that there is no need to panic over the dismal shows for their openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan and he added that they need to be backed.

Mumbai got off to the worst start in their must-win game against Chennai as left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary removed Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan for ducks in the first over. Mukesh dismissed Rohit Sharma as Rohit hit one straight to the mid-on and fell for a 2-ball duck. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan played down the line to a full outswinger and he got bowled.

“It’s been a bit up and down, to be honest. Ishan batted really well in the first couple of games. And then a bit of a slide. Ro has been hitting the ball really well, he gets good starts. 15-20 runs, he looks good, and then he has not been able to convert,” Mahela Jayawardene told the press after Mumbai Indians’ defeat to CSK.

“It will turn around” – Mahela Jayawardene backs Mumbai Indians

He continued, “When that happens, when you get out early, you feel nothing is going your way. I have been a batter and that’s part and parcel of the game. You know I will be concerned when they are not hitting the ball well or if they don’t have the confidence but both of them have been batting well out there and in the nets. You need to back the ability and give them confidence. These are guys who have played a lot of IPL games, and understand what needs to be done. It will turn around. Get in every day, go through the processes and work hard.”

While Mumbai Indians’ bowling has been a concern, the lack of form from the top-order has made things worse for them in IPL 2022. Meanwhile, captain Rohit Sharma has been going through a rough patch, scoring 114 runs in 7 matches at an average of 16.29. Rohit Sharma also set an unwanted record on Thursday, picking up the most ducks in the IPL.

Ishan Kishan, on the other hand, has failed to contribute much and he couldn’t give justice to his huge price tag despite starting the season with 2 successive fifties. He has managed 191 runs in 7 matches with scores of 0, 13, 3, 26, and 14 after his two half-centuries. Moreover, with this defeat, Mumbai Indians are out of the playoff race.
