Savita Punia is a field hockey player who represents the women’s hockey team as a goalkeeper and is the captain of the side. She was born on July 11, 1990, in Jodhkan, a village situated in the Sirsa district of Haryana. She did her education at the district headquarters where she became a part of the sports academy. Her hockey career began when her grandfather, Mahinder Singh, motivated her to try the sport. Savita Punia soon found herself at the Sports Authority of India’s Hisar center. Under the guidance of Sunder Singh Kharab and later Azad Singh Malik, she honed her skills. Although initially she was not into the sport, she eventually became interested when her father invested in her professional kit which made her even more dedicated to playing the sport.

In 2007, still a teenager, Savita Punia was invited to a premier national camp in Lucknow, where she trained alongside top players. The following year saw her begin her journey at the international level with a tour in the Netherlands and Germany. Her official debut on the international stage came in 2011, and since then, she has been a mainstay of Team India, having appeared in 250 matches. She contributed significantly to the Junior Asia Cup team in 2009 and played a pivotal role in securing a bronze at the Eighth Women’s Asia Cup in Malaysia in 2013, where she showcased her skills during penalty shoot-outs.

Savita Punia played an instrumental role at the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, where India clinched a bronze. She was vital in India’s return to the Summer Olympics in Rio after a hiatus of 36 years. In the 2018 Asia Cup, her performance earned her the ‘goalkeeper of the tournament’ title and helped her team secure a place in the World Cup in London. Savita was brilliant at New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay Cup which helped India to a sixth-place finish. She then showed her brilliance in India’s triumph over Chile in the Women’s Hockey World League Round 2 final match. Owing to her contributions to hockey, she was bestowed with the Baljit Singh Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2015.
