Vandana Katariya is a forward who represents the Indian national hockey team. Initially, in her career, she became the top scorer at the Women’s Hockey Junior World Cup in 2013. Her contribution of five goals helped India earn the bronze medal. She has competed in over 200 matches for the senior national team, helping the team earn the bronze medal at the Asian Games in 2014 and representing her country at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Katariya was born in Roshnabad – Haridwar, a region in the present-day state of Uttarakhand on April 15, 1992. Her father, Nahar Singh, held a position as a master technician in BHEL, Haridwar. Vandana Katariya became recognized as one of India’s most talented forwards. Her journey to international competition came with her junior debut in 2006 and senior debut in 2010. Katariya celebrated her 100th game during the Commonwealth Games in 2014. The year also saw her being named Hockey India’s Player of the Year, owing to her significant contributions on the field. At the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 in 2014-15, she was the top scorer with 11 goals, leading India to a tournament win.
Vandana Katariya led the women’s hockey team in November 2016 when she captained the team in a series against Australia. She continued to impress at the Asian Champions Trophy in 2018, where she not only helped the team to a silver medal but also earned the Player of the Tournament achievement. In 2018, ahead of the World Cup, Katariya played her 200th game during a tour in Spain. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics was a special event for Katariya, where she scored three goals in a single match and achieved history becoming the first Indian woman to achieve this feat in the Olympics.
