Born on June 3, 1994, in the village of Lulkidhi in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, Ekka’s early interest in hockey was nurtured by her coach Tej Kumar Xess from 2005-2006. Selected during school tryouts, Ekka’s journey in hockey took a huge stride when she joined the Sports Authority of India’s SAI-SAG center in September 2007 to develop a career in her state at the age of 13. With coaches Lucela Ekka and Saroj Mohanty guiding her, she progressed to participate in the senior nationals at Sonepat at 16 and played at the Ranchi National Games in 2011.

Her junior years saw her traveling to Bangkok for the Junior Asia Cup after being chosen for the Junior National Camp. Initially aspiring to be a goalkeeper like her brother, Ekka’s path changed when her uncle, also her mentor, pushed her towards playing as a defender. She played an instrumental role as India secured a bronze at the U-18 Girls’ Asia Cup in Bangkok in 2011 and was part of the historic team that won the bronze at the Women Junior Hockey World Cup in Germany in 2013. That same year, she contributed to India’s bronze medal win at the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup and the silver at the Asian Champions Trophy.

Ekka was part of the Indian team that achieved a clean sweep against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, and she contributed to India’s fifth-place finish at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Her achievements continued with a bronze at the 17th Asian Games in South Korea in 2014 and a seventh-place finish at the Hawkes Bay Cup in New Zealand in 2015. She celebrated her 100th international appearance against Australia in Darwin on a very special day, which was also her 22nd birthday in 2016.

Her contributions to her home state of Odisha include leading the team to victory in the National School Hockey Championship in 2009 and collecting a runner-up finish at the Women’s National Sports Festival in Bhopal in 2010. Ekka’s state team also claimed third place in the Hockey India Senior National Championship in Sonepat in 2011.
