Craig Fulton is a former international player who represented the South African men’s field hockey team and has also created his impression as a coach. He played in two Summer Olympics (1996 and 2004) and participated in the Men’s Hockey World Cup in 2002. Besides this, some of his significant achievements include coaching the Ireland team to a third-place finish at the Men’s EuroHockey Nations Championship in 2015 earning a spot in the Rio Olympics 2016, and playing a crucial role in Belgium’s title triumph in Men’s Hockey World Cup 2018 and Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Fulton’s educational background includes stints at Pretoria Boys High School and Stellenbosch University. His coaching career began with Chelmsford in the Men’s England Hockey League from 1999 to 2005, where he played a dual role as a player/coach. He led Chelmsford to the Premier Division in 2004 and also coached field hockey at Felsted School. In 2005, Fulton took up the position of director of coaching and player/coach with Pembroke Wanderers. His time at Wanderers was a huge success which saw them win the All-Ireland Men’s Club Championship and two Irish Senior Cups.
Fulton returned to South Africa between 2011 and 2014 and worked as an assistant coach for both the women’s and men’s national teams and coached at the Northern Blues and the University of Pretoria. His coaching skills flourished when he took over as the head coach of the Ireland men’s national field hockey team in 2014, leading them to a third-place finish at the 2015 Men’s EuroHockey Nations Championship and to the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup. His contribution was recognized when he was named the 2015 FIH Men’s Coach of the Year. In 2018, Fulton accepted a role as the assistant coach of the Belgium national team, contributing to their 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup win and their performance in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
