Scott Alexander Scheffler, also known as Scottie Scheffler, is an American professional golfer who is currently at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking with his impressive performance on the PGA Tour. He achieved the world number-one ranking in March 2022. He has held this ranking for more than 50 weeks. Scheffler was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on June 21, 1996. His father, originally from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and his mother, from Park Ridge, New Jersey, introduced him to golf at age three. He later honed his skills under Randy Smith at Royal Oaks Golf Club in Dallas.
During his high school years at Highland Park in University Park, Dallas, Scheffler showcased his talent by winning state individual titles from 2012 to 2014, a feat previously achieved by Jordan Spieth. In 2013, he won the U.S. Junior Amateur and was the top-ranked junior golfer in the country in 2014. He made his PGA Tour debut as a 17-year-old amateur at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, making the cut with his sister Callie as his caddie.
After high school, Scheffler attended the University of Texas, where he played collegiate golf from 2014 to 2018, helping the team to three Big 12 championships. He was recognized as the “Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year” in 2015 and graduated with a degree in finance. He was one of only two amateurs to make the cut at the 2017 U.S. Open, alongside Cameron Champ. His professional career includes wins at the 2019 Evans Scholars Invitational on the Web.com Tour and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. He topped the Finals points list and the overall points list, earning a fully exempt PGA Tour card for the 2020 season and being named Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year.
Scottie Scheffler finished tied for fourth in the 2020 PGA Championship and recorded a 12-under 59 at The Northern Trust in 2020, one of the lowest rounds in PGA Tour history. He won the WM Phoenix Open in 2022 in a sudden-death playoff and then triumphed at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, reaching the world number one. After being named the PGA Tour Player of the Year in 2022, Scheffler defended his WM Phoenix Open title in 2023 and won The Players Championship. This achievement placed him alongside Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win both the Masters Tournament and The Players Championship within 12 months.
