Scottie Scheffler became the new world No.1 in golf after winning The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, Florida. He beat Jon Rahm in the Official World Golf Rankings, who had held the top spot since February 19. Scheffler’s win also earned him a purse of $4.5 million. He won by five strokes, posting a final-round 69, which included a run of five straight birdies, after starting the day with a two-shot lead. He took his time getting going and even bogeyed his third hole of the day. But at the eighth, he chipped in for birdie, and that seemed to spark his dominant run. Scheffler’s lead peaked at six shots, and he cruised to the finish with five pars and a bogey in his last six holes to lead the Golf Rankings.

Scheffler’s victory was remarkable, considering he had to complete eight holes on Saturday morning to close out his second round, which was halted early due to rain. He then went 7-under in his third round to get to 14-under on the week, giving him a two-shot lead over Min Woo Lee after playing 26 holes on the day. Despite other golfers’ close calls, none of them ranked inside the top-10 in the world were within seven shots of Scheffler. This opened the door for Scheffler to overtake Rahm, who withdrew on Friday due to an illness, at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Scottie Scheffler is now only the third golfer in history to hold both The Players title and the Masters Championship title at the same time, joining Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Scottie Scheffler’s recent victory at The Players Championship marked his sixth career win, and it came in only his last 27 starts. This season alone, Scheffler has already won twice, with the first win coming at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last month. This win propelled him back to the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Unfortunately, his time at the top was short-lived, as Jon Rahm overtook him the following week at The Genesis Invitational. Despite this setback, Scheffler’s performances this season have been consistently impressive. In the ten starts he’s made, he’s finished worse than T12 only once.
