Portuguese goalkeeper Jose Sa is the latest addition to the Wolves squad, having signed a five-year deal with the club. The 28-year-old shot-stopper arrives at Molineux from Greek champions Olympiacos. Sa helped the side to successive league titles. The keeper will be joining several of his fellow countrymen in the West Midlands. Sa further played in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 clash between Wolves and Olympiacos just a season ago. He was ruled out of the second leg at Molineux.

“Jose is somebody who is very much coming into his peak years”

“Jose is somebody who is very much coming into his peak years as a goalkeeper and has always been high up on our target list. He’s aggressive when coming for crosses, he commands his penalty area, has excellent distribution and a very pro-active goalkeeper. Sa will be an important part in how we want to play under Bruno,” said Wolves technical director Scott Sellars.

“He’s also gained so much experience throughout his career, especially over the last few years while playing in Greece, appearing for Olympiacos in the Champions League and in the Europa League, where he played against us not so long ago. Sa’s played for Portugal, he’s won several league titles and we certainly feel he’s a keeper who is ready for that next step into the Premier League,” he added.

62 clean sheets in three seasons

Sa played 124 times for Olympiacos. He kept 62 clean sheets in three seasons, as the Piraeus-based club claimed their 45th and 46th Greek Super League titles. Olympiacos further recorded a triumph in the 2019/20 Greek Football Cup.

Prior to his move to Greece, Sa spent his career in his native Portugal. He progressed up the youth ranks at Merelinense and Benfica, under new Wolves head coach Bruno Lage. Sa broke through as a professional at Maritimo, spending two years at Porto where he shared a dressing room with new Wolves teammates Ruben Neves and Willy Boly.

Sa initially featured as back-up for Spanish international Iker Casillas. He would go on to feature regularly as the club secured the 2017/18 Primeira Liga. The goalkeeper further made five outings in the Champions League that same season.

Sa will bring plenty of international experience with him to Wolves. He played several times for his country at youth level and at the 2016 Olympic Games. The keeper is yet to earn his first senior cap. However, he was a part of the Portugal squad that won the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019.

Recent signing of Francisco Trincao

Lage earlier made Portuguese winger Francisco Trincao the second addition to his squad. The 21-year-old joins on a season-long loan from La Liga giants FC Barcelona. The same is subject to a medical and work permit. Interestingly, Wolves enjoy an option to make the move permanent in the future. Trincao has played for Portugal alongside as many as six new Wolves teammates. He will now make his maiden appearance in the Premier League, being a regular member of the national squad. It will be interesting to note the performance of the footballer in the setup.
