West Ham United will begin their 2022-23 Europa Conference League campaign with a Group B match at home against FCSB on Thursday night. The hosts had secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season to earn a place in the Conference League qualifying playoff round, where they defeated Viborg 6-1 on aggregate to progress to the group stages of the competition. FCSB, meanwhile, came through the qualifying rounds, overcoming the likes of Saburtalo, Dunajska Streda and Viking to reach this far.

West Ham are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in a Premier League fixture last Saturday. West Ham striker Michael Anronio broke the deadlock just after the hour-mark. But the Blues netted twice through Ben Chillwell and Kai Havertz to hand a fourth league defeat of the season to the Hammers. The East London outfit had reached the semi-finals of the 2021-22 Conference League, where they lost to eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt. David Moyes’ side are certainly the favourites to progress through to the knockout stage from a group consisting of Anderlecht, Silkeborg and FCSB.

FCSB, on the other hand, had finished second in the Romanian top flight table last season to earn a place in the qualifying rounds of the Conference League. The Red and Blues have made a disastrous start to their 2022-23 Liga I season, recording just one from their opening seven league games to be sitting at the 13th position in the table. The Romanian outfit reached the last 32 stage of Europa League in the 2017-18 season.
West Ham boss Moyes is likely to opt for a 3-4-3 formation with Bowen and Scamacca leading the line. Summer-signing Paquets could operate behind the strikers with Coufal and Cornet occupying the flanks. As for FCSB, Andrea Compagno is likely to be the target-man up front with Cordea, Miculescu and Coman in support.
