Southampton would be looking to return to winning ahead of the Championship playoffs when they play host to Stoke City at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a disappointing 5-0 defeat away to leaders Leicester City on Tuesday, while the Potters thrashed Plymouth Argyle 3-0 last weekend. The victory helped the visitors to move to 18th spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 50 points from 44 games, four clear of the relegation zone with two games remaining. The Saints, on the other hand, are sitting at the fourth position, with 84 points to their name from 44 league matches, six adrift of the top two and 12 clear of fifth-placed West Bromwich Albion.

Southampton’s bid to challenge for an automatic qualification spot ended on Tuesday night after behind thrashed by Leicester City at King Power Stadium. It was their second successive defeat and tenth league-loss of the season. The Russell Martin’s side will end their league campaign with a trip to second-placed Leeds next week before heading into the playoffs. Meanwhile, Southampton’s home-record has been impressive in the last couple of weeks, recording four wins and a draw from their last five games at St. Mary’s stadium.
Stoke, on the other hand, have managed to to move six points clear of relegation zone courtesy of putting three goals past Plymouth without reply last time out. The Potters took a 2-0 lead in the first-half thanks to Ki-Jana Hoever’s opener two minutes before the break and Million Manhoef’s effort on the stroke of half-time. And then, Wouter Burger put the icing on the cake with a 93rd-minute strike. It was their 13th Championship win of the season and the result ended their four game winless run, that included three draws. Should 22nd-placed Birmingham City fail to defeat Huddersfield Town, a draw will be enough for Steven Schumacher’s side to ensure survival.
