Villarreal will play host to Panathinaikos in a Europa League group stage fixture at Estadio de la Ceramica on Thursday. The hosts are currently occupying second spot in Group F, having taken six points from three games, two clear of third placed Greens, who have played a game more. Meanwhile, the two sides are heading into the match on the back of contrasting results in their respective league-fixtures at the weekend, with the Yellow Submarine defeating Osasuna 3-1 in the La Liga, while the visitors suffered a 2-0 Super League Greece-defeat away to Aris Limassol.

Although Villarreal began their Europa League campaign with a 2-0 defeat away to Panathinaikos in September, they have managed to take six points from their last two Group F games, defeating the likes of Rennes and Maccabi Haifa. The Yellow Submarine came from behind to get the better of Maccabi Haifa on November 9 thanks to two late goals from Alex Baena and Alexander Sorlon. Three days later, the Yellow Submarine suffered a 3-1 La Liga defeat away to Atletico Madrid. However, on their return to action following the international break, Villarreal got the better of Zamora 2-1 in the Copa del Rey on November 22 and then four day later, prevailed 3-1 over Osasuna in the Spanish top flight. Marcelino’s side recorded their fourth league win of the campaign against Osasuna last time out thanks to Jose Luis Morales’ hat-trick.
Panathinaikos, on the other hand, have won just one of their four group games so far, and they have work to do if they are to progress to the knockout stage of Europe’s second tier club competition. After taking four points from their opening two group matches, the Greens suffered back-to-back defeats against Rennes, home and away. The Shamrock were edged out via 2-1 scoreline on matchday three, before they fell to a3-1 loss on their trip to France earlier this month. Although Panathinaikos bounced back with a narrow 1-0 Greek top flight win over Kifisias before the international break, Ivan Jovanovic’s side are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 league-defeat to Aris at the weekend. It was Panathinaikos’ second Super League Greece-defeat of the campaign, while they are currently occupying top spot in the standings, with 28 points to their name from 12 league games.
