Maccabi Haifa are looking to enter the knockout stage of the European competition for the first time since the 2006-07 UEFA Cup. The Israeli outfit secured their lone Europa League point this term against Panathinaikos (0-0) last month, while Messay Dego’s side then suffered a 2-1 loss to Villarreal earlier this month despite taking the lead through Abdoulaye Seck’s 29th-minute opener. As a result of that defeat, the Greens could be eliminated with two games to play if they fail to win and Villarreal beat Panathinaikos in the group’s other fixture. Meanwhile, the Greens from the Carmel are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 Israeli Premier League win over Hapoel Petah Tikva at the weekend, courtesy of first-half effort from Ilay Hajaj and Tjaronn Chery.
Rennes, on the other hand, are in a strong position to reach the knockout round of the Europa League for a second straight season, having won three of their four group games so far. The Red and Blacks suffered their lone defeat against Villarreal on October 5, but the Ligue 1 outfit managed to get the better of Panathinaikos home and away, with an aggregate scoreline of 5-2. Meanwhile, Julian Stephan’s side are heading into the match on the back of a 3-1 league win over Reims at the weekend, thanks to goals from Amine Gouiri, Benjamin Bourigeaud and Arthur Theate. It was their third top flight victory of the season, and Rennes are currently occupying tenth spot in the Ligue 1 standings, having taken 15 points from 13 games.
